Throwing a Pretty Broad Net

So I went out to mow the lawn and there it was, this week's Dunwoody Crier with a New York Post-style headline that shouted out the news. I could literally feel the joy in that picture when I picked up the paper. A big congrats to all the folks who have clearly worked long and hard on making this historic turn-of-events possible.

Last night, at the kind of neighborhood joint that I wish I had within walking distance of my home, I sketched out my editorial vision for Sustainable Dunwoody (or what on earth I'm up to here). I intend to post five days a week, Monday through Friday (the same editorial schedule as FoodShed Planet). Each day will feature a post related to a different major category of sustainability:

* Monday: Sustainable Business (sole proprietors, small businesses, large corporations and everything in between)

* Tuesday: Sustainable Food (local organic farm and prepared food via grocery stores, farmers markets and CSAs as well as community and home gardens)

* Wednesday: Sustainable Transportation (commute alternatives, new technologies, urban planning, and did I hear talk about kudzu as a bio-fuel?!)

* Thursday: Sustainable Greenspace (parks, nature preserves, pesticide-reduction, unstructured outdoor play, and community beautification that encourages outdoor exploration and enjoyment)

* Friday: Sustainable Neighborhood (walkability, safe routes to school, lawn reduction, backyard wildlife habitats, edible landscapes, rain harvesting, increased home efficiency, solar power, etc.)

I'm throwing a pretty broad net here and will cover a great deal of ground because, ultimately, it's all connected and things that are happening in one area affect the others. If you are particularly interested in one category, please swing by on that day. If you would like to stay abreast of what's happening across the spectrum, consider signing up for the Sustainable Dunwoody RSS feed (click on the link in the sidebar) and you will receive updates automatically.

What's more, I'm in touch with lots of amazing organizations doing ground-breaking things in Atlanta and around the world. I'll post links to some of these organizations in the sidebar under "Links You May Like" and I'll call your attention to broader stories I may write on FoodShed Planet or in other media venues about them.

In short, it's a journey and we're blazing a bit of a new trail here. There will be a huge number of decisions to make, and we won't always agree. But that's how it goes. We'll make some mistakes and we'll learn. And we'll grow. And we'll prosper in a wide variety of ways that truly make a difference for the long-term sustainability of our beautiful new city.

Pattie, great site and thank you for adding to the Dunwoody blogisphere; I'll be adding you to my blogroll & will also be checking in on a regular basis.

The photo of "great joy" shown on the cover of the Crier exclaiming "It's a City", is my wife Kristin who routinely wears her heart on her sleeve. Thanks for sharing it.
